RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - Walters has served as RTI's chief medical officer since February 2008. The elevation of his position to vice president and chief medical officer is in response to the growth and increased complexity of RTI's work.
In addition to guiding RTI's efforts in the area of health research, Walters serves on the Risk Management Committee Executive Leadership Team, providing oversight of the institute's risks. He also serves as the chairman for the Wellness Advisory Committee which oversees the Healthcounts wellness program.
Walters holds a Ph.D. in anatomy and embryology from the University of London, an M.D. from Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), and an A.B. in chemistry and physics from Harvard College.
After completing his Ph.D. and M.D. degrees, Walters did a surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a neurological surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He then joined the faculty of the UNC-CH School of Medicine, where he established the radiosurgery program (with colleagues from radiation oncology) and epilepsy surgery program (with colleagues from neurology). His basic research investigated central nervous system trauma.
Walters has also focused on Phase I and Phase II clinical trial projects, where he performed clinical trial design, data analysis and interpretation, and medical writing. He has been involved with regulatory submissions to the FDA and European Competent Authorities for clinical trials in the United States, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Canada.
He continues to serve on the Science Advisory Board of UNC-Greensboro, and the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Human Subjects at UNC-CH. He also serves on the executive committee of the RTI Press.
